The Tropical Wisdom

Abstract: The architecture of Sri Lanka has attained the stature of prominence and more importantly, that of being regional and pragmatic. Contemporary architecture in Sri Lanka is one of the finest examples wherein its practitioners have been able to put it up not only as an “expression” but also as a response to its context. The research began with a brief orientation lecture about Tropical Architecture before leaving for Colombo. The travel to Sri Lanka included seeing and studying the works of some of the prominent contemporary architects there. Interactions with them provided us an insight into the factors/forces that influenced them. They also shared their aspirations as an individual, who believed themselves responsible for creating an “image” of the place through built forms. The trip included travelling to some of the important historical sites in order to understand the influences of tradition in imparting a language to the tectonics and the formal aspects of architecture.

Humanizing Spaces

Abstract: Architecture is a learned game; it is a field of giving and taking learnings. To design for the present, it is necessary to learn what has already been done in the past to create a better future. But the question which arises is how can this learning be transferred from one to another. It is through analyzing architecture. Analyzing gives a better understanding of what all important design decisions are taken by an architect and how he or she has met with the challenges of design. This research would help in understanding the approach of an architect, and the learnings will help to develop one’s own design. Scale and proportion is the factor which is considered the most right from the first year of architectural studies and is always considered while talking about any built form. It is very essential to provide the right setting, physically and psychologically, for human well-being. There are various experiential parameters attached to the scale and proportion. Every architect has his own way to approach it. This dissertation is an inquiry into an expression of scale and proportions in architecture through the works of Leo Pereira.

digital technology is a constant factor towards transforming our relationship with both human and more than human worlds. This article is written to comprehend how our relationship with nature is changing (and contributing to unsustainable existences) and how digital is shaping and can reshape our current understanding of nature, driving us to develop a new set of networks and
thus ecology. We refer to this as D-Transitional Ecology. Here, rather than criticizing digital, it is accepted as a part of our daily life as a tool that may transform our current unsustainable ways of thinking about nature.
